Comparing broadcast and cable TV services comes down to how much choice a consumer has, and how much they are willing to pay for it.
Broadcast, or over the air, television is free. All that is needed to receive programming is an antenna. The compromise is a very limited range of channels to watch. Free TV service usually consists of the four major networks, a couple of local stations, a Spanish language station and a PBS affiliate. In smaller markets the choices may be even more limited. From the hair pulling and the fist-fighting to otherwise normal people eating worms and swimming with sharks, some very interesting things have happened on reality television shows. Some of it is dramatic, and some of it is downright hilarious. Reality TV is simply more interesting because of the fact that it contains real people doing real things.
Due to the ubiquity of reality programming on television today, it’s easy to think of it as being a relatively new fad. The truth of the matter is that reality TV has been on the air practically as long as any other programming. Allen Funt developed a show in 1948 that featured real people being caught in embarrassing situations with a hidden camera. This television program was aptly titled Candid Camera, and it can be considered the first reality television show.
In 1973, PBS made the first reality TV show that let viewers peek into the lives of the Loud family as they lived their daily routine for seven months. Viewers at home watched as An American Family dealt with issues that would seem normal today, such as divorce and gay rights. Although these moments are sometimes painful to watch, home viewers identify with real people in a much more profound way than with an actor on a sitcom or television drama.
The early pioneers paved the way for what is now a booming business. It seems as though every channel on broadcast television has some form of reality show, if not multiple shows. Some of them follow the patterns of catching unsuspecting people in silly situations. The proliferation of home video cameras and cell phones has made these unscripted shows even more fun. Everyone has a chance to join in.
Other popular shows involve showing regular people achieving great things. Some shows have people winning incredible sums of money, while other shows feature people getting a chance to meet, fall in love and then marry the spouse of their dreams on live television. Whatever the focus of the show may be, it seems like reality TV shows are here to stay. You can watch, record, rewind and fast-forward all the drama with your DVR, like the one you can order from www.DirectspcialTV.com.
